Install EPEL Repository and Group
Installing the XFCE desktop environment requires that we first install the EPEL repository, which is a repository that provides high quality software packages for RHEL distributions. To install EPEL on your system, run the following command.
$ sudo dnf install epel-release
In our case, EPEL is already installed, so no further action is required. After installing EPEL, you can confirm its presence by running the rpm command:
$ rpm -qi epel-release
The output provides detailed information such as installed version, release, installed date and size, just to mention a few properties. Then enable the EPEL group as follows.
$ sudo dnf –enablerepo=epel group
Install XFCE on Rocky and AlmaLinux
With EPEL installed, the next course of action is to install the XFCE package. You can confirm that the XFCE package is a group of packages provided by the EPEL repository as shown.
$ sudo dnf list of groups | grep -i xfce Xfce
From the output we can deduce that the XFCE package is available. So, to install the XFCE package, run the following command:
$ sudo dnf groupinstall “Xfce” “base-x”
The command installs all XFCE modules and groups packages and other dependencies on your system.
Set XFCE to start automatically
If you are performing a minimal installation, configure the XFCE desktop environment to start automatically at boot time.
