Open the downloaded .zip file and open the Google Photos file. There you will find all the folders you selected earlier when setting up the export. These folders contain photos and videos from that year, along with .json files for each media file. These .json files contain some extra Google Photos metadata that is useless in Synology’s corresponding Photos app.

To get rid of these files all at once, search for .json in the Takeout folder, select them all and throw them into the Trash. At this point, you can also restructure the folder directory as you see fit, but you don’t have to, as Synology Photos organizes images by date by default.

Now open your Synology NAS in a web browser and open File Station to find the folder configured with the Synology Photos package. All you need to do here is drag the Google Photos folder and drop it there. Instead of accessing it through a web browser, you can also use File Explorer or Finder if you have already linked your NAS to your computer’s file manager.

The upload process may take some time depending on the size of the folder. After that, Synology Photos will start processing your media files for indexing and the various Google Photos-inspired AI features. After this is done, your photos and videos should appear in the Synology Photos web and phone apps just as they do in Google Photos.
