How to Launch Terminal Windows PC on Ubuntu Linux – Guide
Let’s say you’re new to the Linux world and you’ve just installed the Linux desktop and now you want to launch the terminal window and start issuing commands, but wait until you don’t know how to access a terminal window in Linux. People use a variety of desktop environments as well as Linux distributions. Therefore, terminal commands are often the same or easier to constrain than writing full graphical instructions for each combination.
When using Ubuntu, it is easier to install the software from the command line than to use the available graphical software tools. The apt-get command provides access to all packages in Ubuntu’s repositories, often without the graphical tool. The shell is a command-line interface program that takes user commands as input, processes the command, and prints the output to the screen. Most Linux systems come with bash (Bourne Again SHell) installed, and by default bash is an enhanced version of the Unix shell program sh (shell). In addition to bash, there are other shell programs that can be installed on Linux machines, such as B.ksh, zsh, and csh.
Opening the Linux Terminal Window
I’m using a Centos 8 machine with the Gnome Desktop Environment. I’m going to show you two different ways to open a Linux terminal window.
Option 1
The Gnome desktop environment makes it easy to access the application, to access the terminal window press the super key (also known as the Windows key) and you should see the Terminal application listed in the application panel on the left side, if not the If you see it listed here just start looking for “Terminal” in the search area.
option 2
The other way (my favorite) is to open the terminal window with a keyboard shortcut. Who doesn’t like having a keyboard shortcut? Keyboard shortcuts make it easy to launch apps. You can create a keyboard shortcut to open a terminal window, create a new shortcut, press the super key and search for “keyboard” or “shortcut” and launch it.
Provide the required information, such as Shortcut name, command. You can name it whatever you want, I called it “Open Terminal Window”, the command in this case is “gnome-terminal”, since gnome-terminal is installed on centos and RHEL machines. If you have other terminal emulators like “konsole”, provide that command in this field. In the next article, I will show how to install other Linux terminal emulators.
Click set shortcut button to define a new keyboard shortcut, this is where you register the key combination to launch the terminal window. I used CTRL + ALT + T, you can use any combination, but remember that this key combination must be unique and not be used by other keyboard shortcuts.
