How to Customize the Mouse Options in Windows 10 PC – Guide
It doesn’t matter if you use a desktop computer or a laptop, you always rely on your mouse (or touchpad) to navigate Windows 10. The mouse has been around for years and is, in fact, an important peripheral in our digital lives, so customizing it properly is critical to the best experience.
In Windows 10, Microsoft wants you to use the Settings app to customize all aspects of the operating system, including mouse settings, but the options available through the Settings app are quite limited. Fortunately, you can still use Mouse Properties in Control Panel to customize your experience.
Basic mouse settings
The Windows 10 Settings area is constantly changing, with Microsoft eventually trying to get rid of the Control Panel. Until that time, mouse settings are split between two areas. Press the Windows key + I to open Settings and navigate to Devices > Mouse. This is where you’ll find some basic mouse customizations.
Use Select your principal button drop-down menu to switch between left and right. The former is standard, but you may find it useful to switch to the latter if you use your left-hand mouse.
The Roll mouse wheel to scroll drop-down menu lets you choose how windows behave when you roll the mouse. Multiple lines at a time is the default setting, but you can change it to One screen at a time if you like.
If you selected multiple lines, you can use the slider below to determine how many lines will be scrolled at one time. The farther left the slider is, the fewer lines the mouse will scroll at once. Finally, Rolling inactive windows when I hover over them is an on/off button. If enabled, you only need to hover over a window to scroll, instead of clicking first.
Advanced mouse settings
To access advanced mouse settings, click Additional Mouse Options. This will open a separate window. Each section below refers to a different tab in this window.
Buttons
The first section here, Button setting, is the same as Select your main button option found on the Settings screen. Double-click speed lets you adjust how quickly you need to double-click the mouse for it to be recognized as a single action. Adjust the Speed slider and use the folder icon to test it.
ClickLock is a feature that lets you highlight or drag (for example, selecting multiple files or moving a desktop icon) without holding down the mouse button. If you choose Enable ClickLock, you will only need to press the mouse briefly button, with another click releasing it. Once enabled, click Settings… to adjust how long the mouse click should last before registering as a ClickLock.
pointers
Here you can change the visual style of the cursor and its many different states. The Schemes drop-down menu provides the ability to change the entire set of cursors at once. Standard schemes available include black, invert and pattern, in a variety of different sizes.
Alternatively or additionally, you can use the Customize section to change specific states. Select it from the list, click Browse… and find the .ANI (animated) or .CUR (static) file you want to replace it with. Once chosen, click Open. Check the Open Cursors Library for many different free cursors. All you need to do is download them and use the instructions above to locate them on your system.
Pointer Options
Use Select Pointer Speed to change how quickly the cursor moves across the screen. You might be tempted to click to turn on Improve Pointer Accuracy, but take a break. This adjusts how far the cursor moves depending on how fast you move it. It’s good if you have a mouse with a bad sensor, but it’s less useful if you want the mouse movements to always be the same (like if you were playing high-precision games). The Fit to option will automatically move your cursor to the default button (such as OK or Apply) when a dialog opens.
Check Show pointer trails if you want the cursor to duplicate as you move it. Use the slider below to adjust how short or long the track should be.
Finally, you can check to Hide pointer when typing and Show pointer location when I press Ctrl. This last option is useful if you have difficulty locating the cursor, perhaps due to your vision or the size of your monitor.
Wheel
The Vertical Scrolling section customizes the same thing as the Settings section, but here you can set the specific number of rows that are scrolled instead of using a slider. You can also do something similar to Horizontal Scrolling and define how many characters you want scrolled by moving the wheel horizontally.
Hardware
This final section shows which devices you have installed. This is more informative than anything, although you can double-click each device to open its properties. Here you will see the status of the device, along with the date and version of the unit installed. This can be useful if you need to troubleshoot mouse issues, such as updating or rolling back the driver.
Ease of access
Press Windows key + I and go to Ease of Access > Mouse. Here you will find some options to make viewing and using the mouse easier if you have difficulties with the patterns. Similar to the schemes detailed above, here you can change the pointer size and pointer color between three options.
The mouse buttons The section offers the option to Use the numeric keypad to move the mouse around the screen. This turns each number on the pad into a direction. For example, 8 is up and 2 is disabled.
I would suggest enabling Hold Ctrl to speed up up and Shift to slow down. This gives you more control and is especially useful as the default speed is often very slow. Finally, use the mouse keys when Num Lock is on to toggle if Num Lock is on. feature is activated when Num Lock is on or off.
