People who know how to use the standard T7 and the T7 Touch will quickly feel at ease with the T7 Shield.
It weighs only 0.21 pounds (98g), is about the size of a playing card, and has a USB-C 3.2 (Gen 2) port with a state LED on one end. The main feature of the T7 Shield is a fixed rubberized shell that helps protect the drive from drops and shocks. This shell adds a lot of weight. It’s easy to hold on to because it’s padded, and it feels great in your hand.
[content-egg-block template=offers_logo hide=price]The T7 and T7 Touch can handle drops from two metres, but the T7 Shield can handle drops from three metres and also has IP65 ratings for water and dust protection. This safety is only good up to a point. You shouldn’t swim with the SSD, but it should give you peace of mind the next time you get caught in the rain or need to use the drive out in the field. Samsung’s three-year guarantee doesn’t cover damage from dust, water, or drops, but after using the drive for months for work and travel, it seems like you’d have to do something really bad to damage it.

Where to Get Samsung T7 Shield SSD?
While the T7 Touch has a fingerprint reader built right into the case, the T7 Shield does not. However, it does still have 256-bit AES encryption and password safety. The SSD comes with software that asks you to set up a password the first time you plug it into a PC. You don’t have to, but it’s always a good idea to do so. The T7 Shield has the same 10Gbps USB-C 3.2 (Gen 2) port as the other Samsung drives, so performance will be the same across the board. It says that the read speed is about 1,050MB/s and the write speed is about 1,000MB/s. When I used CrystalDiskMark to try this myself, I saw even faster read speeds but slower write speeds.
The speeds should be about the same for the larger capacities, as I tried with the 1TB model. You won’t have to wait as long while moving large files or groups of small files with the T7 Shield because it works so well. It took me less than a minute to move my main folder of pictures, which had almost 5,000 files and almost 200 subfolders, to the T7 Shield. It also took me about 18 seconds to move a 10GB file. During tests, there were no problems with heat. The drive got a little warmer, but not very much.
