How to transfer your data to a new Android phone or iPhone – Guide
When switching from an Android phone for iPhone, moving your photos, contacts, calendars and accounts is easier than ever with Apple’s Move to iOS app. Apple’s first Android app, it attaches and connects your old Android and new Apple device via a direct Wi-Fi connection and transfers all your data to your iPhone. Although the Move to iOS app transfers a lot of your data, it’s not useful for transferring your apps (as they’re not supported), music, or any of your passwords. Also, you can only move your data from an Android phone or tablet to an iPhone or iPad with iOS 9 or higher. If you have the new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max, you won’t have any problems.
How to move your data from an android phone for an iPhone
If you are going to switch from a newer Android phone for an iPhone, there is a serious wrinkle. Apple’s Android migration tool, Move to iOS, doesn’t (at the moment) seem to work with phones running Android 9 Pie (the latest version of Android). Could not get it to connect to iOS phones in our tests, and our experience seems to echo in online support forums. Previous versions – Android Oreo (8.x) – work.
Given that Android Pie is quite new and the migration tools are usually for the older ones phones, this may not be a limiting factor for you. But you should certainly know before you start. There seem to be third-party workarounds that use your PC as an intermediary (AnyTrans seems to be a favorite), but we haven’t tested them. Another possibility, if you have an older Android phone useful, is to move your data to that phone per the instructions above, migrate to the new iPhone as follows:
- Once you’ve chosen your locale and language on your iPhone, you’re offered a Quick Start screen to migrate from another iOS device. That’s not what you’re doing, so tap Set Up Manually.
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network of your choice. (You can also do this through a cellular network, if you prefer.)
- To define up Tap ID / Face ID or just set a PIN. You can come back and do the biometrics later.
- You will then be asked if you want to migrate data to your iPhone and from where. Tap Move Android Data, then tap Continue. A six or 10 digit code will appear.
- on your android phone, go to the Play Store and download the Move to iOS app. Open it, tap Continue and accept the Terms and Conditions. A Find Your Code screen will appear. Tap Next in the upper right corner.
- Enter your iPhone code on Android phone. O phones will pair.
- The Android app will ask you what data you want to move. Tap to select and tap Next.
- Data will be transferred. keep defining up your iPhone.
- After inserting or defining up your Apple IDs, you will have the opportunity to download iOS versions of your Android apps, which is a nice touch.
